Virtual Surgical Planning Aids Complex Facial Reconstruction
Surgeries utilize prefabricated jigs, precontoured plates to ease osteocutaneous flap molding, inset

THURSDAY, Sept. 12 (HealthDay News) -- Virtual surgical planning aids in the performance of successful complex maxillofacial reconstruction, according to a study published in the September issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Adam Saad, M.D., from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, and colleagues retrospectively reviewed the charts of 10 consecutive patients who underwent complex maxillofacial reconstruction using virtual surgical planning with computed tomographic scanning. Complex maxillofacial reconstruction was defined as requiring an osteocutaneous flap in which multiple osteotomies were required plus one of the following: need for multiple free flaps, history of osteoradionecrosis, and ballistic injuries. Prefabricated jigs and precontoured plates were utilized.

The researchers observed no intraoperative complications. Postoperative computed tomographic scans performed for reconstruction evaluation showed excellent contour of the osseous flaps. Functional mandibular range of motion was achieved in all patients.

"Use of virtual surgical planning allows for complex maxillofacial reconstruction with multiple simultaneous free flaps to be performed reliably and successfully," the authors write.
